Whereas the weeping willow is a high water-consuming species capable of absorbing contaminated water and is used in landfill site treatment. Indeed, willows benefit from leachate as a source of nutrients, which promotes rapid growth and significant biomass production. They therefore contribute to the remediation of soil and water while helping to limit pollution of waterways; and Whereas planting weeping willows near a landfill producing leachate is an excellent phytoremediation strategy; and Whereas these trees are highly tolerant of contamination, absorb large quantities of water (leachate), and filter contaminants such as PFAS (“forever chemicals”); and Whereas the 2027 budget process provides an opportunity to evaluate potential programs such as Evaplant technology. Therefore be it resolved that Council direct municipal staff to investigate solutions for reducing leachate at the landfill site, including the planting of willows; and Be it further resolved that staff submit a report containing their findings and recommendations so that Council may review them prior to the 2027 budget deliberations.
